Target Beach, Jervis Bay
Target Beach is on the Beecroft Peninsula, west of Point Perpendicular, and can be accessed by driving through Nowra, west towards Currarong, along Greenwell Point Rd, Culburra Rd, Coonamia Rd and Currarong Rd. The turnoff to Target Beach is 4km short of Currarong through the gates of the Beecroft National Park. Head towards Honeymoon Bay and keep drving through the camping area at the Bay. The road through the park is dirt and can get boggy after a rain. Target Beach is reached by a 3km bush walk down a steep mountain. At the top you can take in a magnificent 180 degree view of Point Perpendicular Light House, the steep rocky cliffs that surround Target Beach, Bowen Island, the Heads of Jervis Bay and Target Beach. Fishing spots like the Inner Torpedo Tubes are one of the only land-based areas in Australia where game fish like Marlin and Yellow Striped Tuna can be caught. The tubes are west of Target Beach and can be accessed by Point Perpendicular as well. Target Beach is known for its large surf, rips and sand bars. Strong swimmers, bodyboarders and surfers should only swim here. No lifeguards patrol this beach. Target Beach is thought to have been named after a large wooden target raft drifted onto its beaches in WWII. Massive timber targets such as this one were towed out to sea and used by naval ships for firing practice. For many years the large wooden raft was partly buried in the sand at the western end of the beach. |
